Submission Information and Guidelines
​We invite all original, fiction, nonfiction, poetry and visual art work by current high school students in the Region 8, Southside, Virginia area. Our submission portal is open until February 1st with publication set for early May. We look forward to providing authors, poets and visual artists with a platform on which they can publish their work. (Region 8 schools, public and private, include schools in Amelia, Appomattox, Brunswick, Buckingham, Charlotte, Cumberland, Greensville, Halifax, Lunenburg, Mecklenburg, Nottoway and Prince Edward.)
* There is no submission fee.
* All content must be your own work, not published or exhibited previously.
* We do not accept fan fiction.
* We do not accept appropriated visual art work even if used as commentary or parody.
* Absolutely NO use of generative artificial intelligence, to include brainstorming and outlining. There will be a permanent ban on submissions if use of generative AI is discovered.​
* Format and proofread your work before submitting.
* We strongly encourage you to participate in a writing workshop and/or visual art critique to help you improve your work before submission.
* There is one recognition award for each category determined by the adjudicators.
* Remove all identifying information (name, school, etc.) from your submission to keep the adjudication blind.
* Follow Fuqua school and your school's code of conduct concerning acceptable work.
* By submitting your work, you and your guardian or parent, agree you are the sole creator of your work (unless you acknowledge a collaborator and have their consent), you are following submission guidelines and we have your permission to publish your work.
Fiction
* One submission per author
* Creative fiction and novel excerpts between 2,000 - 5,000 words
* Use 12 point Times New Roman font, double spaced
* All submissions must be formatted as doc, docx or single pdf

Nonfiction
* One submission per author
* Nonfiction and novel excerpts between 2,000 - 5,000 words

Poetry
* Up to three submissions at one time
* Use 12 point Times New Roman font, double spaced, unless it infringes upon your poetic form
* All submissions must be formatted as doc, docx or pdf (up to three submissions at one time).
* Submit work for poetry here.
Visual Arts
* All visual art media accepted (such as painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, woodwork, digital, metalsmithing, installation, mixed media) We can not accept videos or motion at this time.
* Up to three submissions at one time.
* All submissions must be formatted as pdf, tiff or jpeg.
* All submissions must be high resolution files, no smaller than 300 dpi, 6"- 8" in one direction, horizontal or vertical.
* Upload images of your work without artist's signature and have the art work fill the frame unless it is sculptural. Sculptures and installations may have backgrounds.

Visual Arts
* Good two-dimensional example. Art work fills the image with no visible background. The art work is well lit or evenly lit, is true to the original colors/values and is squared to the picture plane (not tilted).

* Good three-dimensional example. Art work fills the image with simple background. The art work is well lit or evenly lit, is true to the original colors/values and is squared to the picture plane (not tilted). If you have an installation work, then you may have a background. You may also upload up to three images, with one being a detail. The example below is of a book, which is three-dimensional. The three images correspond to the book closed, the book stretched open and the book opened to one page.
